"Fear and Anxiety Were Exploited by Zealots and Fools"

Philip Zelikow (former executive director of the 9/11 Commission, served on the Bush transition team in 2000/2001, former counselor to Secretary of State Condi Rice, served on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, and now a historian who teaches at the University of Virginia) was asked by Jane Mayer, author of "The Dark Side", how history would view the U.S. use of torture during the war on terror.  Zelikow replied it would be viewed as equivalent to FDR's internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II and implemented, essentially, for the same reason as the internment: "Fear and anxiety were exploited by zealots and fools"

Here's a video (I should warn you - it's long, over an hour) of an interview with Jane Mayer.  Staggering stuff.
