The folks over at Open Left are pushing a petition urging Barack
Obama to consider retired Gen. Wesley Clark as his vice presidential
candidate. Clark was rumored to be on Obama's short list, but
(probably) fell off when he had the temerity to question John McCain's
credentials to be commander in chief.
Clark has a 34 year service record, has won a war, commanded troops all over the world, and nearly died of his injuries in Vietnam. He has run for President and been a surrogate for hundreds of Democrats all over the country, including Ned Lamont. He was against the war in Iraq, and knows the military bureaucracy inside and out. This is someone who would make an insanely good Vice President, and someone who has deep connections to the newly formed progressive communities that emerged from 2002-2006. (Link)
Here's what I like about Wesley Clark; the man is a fighter who pulls no punches, a real "straight talker" and not a phony, for public relations one like Senator McCain. When everyone else was tip toeing around, being oh so careful about not offending John McCain's delicate sensibilities, Wesley Clark was out there on the cable news shows, unrepentent, asserting John McCain is without executive experience. A war hero for sure, but never been in the midst of the real executive decision making. When challenged by incredulous moderators that Obama was without that experience as well, Clark had the perfect comeback; Barack Obama never claimed he had that experience, and John McCain was basing his whole campaign on the experience he lacks.
Democrats have for too long allowed Republicans to define them. Too liberal. Soft on defense. Big spenders. Yadda yadda yadda. Give me a Democrat who relishes a fight, who's looking forward to going toe to toe with Republicans and defining them instead of allowing them to define him.
